About heavy metals in prenatal multivitamins

Prenatal multivitamins containing certain minerals critical to support an expectant person’s health and proper development of their fetus may contain trace levels of heavy metals that occur in the environment naturally or from human activities. The levels of heavy metals in prenatal multivitamin ingredients may vary depending on whether and at what levels the prenatal multivitamin contains these ingredients, as well as the location from which the ingredients are sourced. Certain foods containing minerals critical to support an expectant person’s health and proper development of their fetus may also contain heavy metals. For more information, speak with your physician about choosing a prenatal multivitamin that meets your specific nutrient needs.

How to read these results

  • µg is micrograms in one packet, which is one serving and one day’s amount. ppb is parts per billion (micrograms per kilogram of powder).
  • Not detected means the amount was below the lab’s reporting limit, shown after the “<”.
  • Arsenic is total arsenic (inorganic plus organic), so the inorganic share can only be the same or lower.
  • Prop 65 limits are California’s Proposition 65 daily levels: 10 µg arsenic, 4.1 µg cadmium, 0.5 µg lead and 0.3 µg mercury. They’re among the strictest in the US.
  • Why not zero? Heavy metals occur naturally in soil and water, so nearly every food and supplement has trace amounts. What matters is staying well under the limits.
  • Results are from the finished, blended powder of each lot, measured by ICP-MS.
